Menace From The Deep

During the recent sunny spell this has been the view from my local station while waiting for the Fenchurch Flyer - but as sunny and delightful as this appears there is a real and deadly danger below the waves.

Just off shore (on the Kent side of the Thames) lies the the wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery loaded with somewhere between 1000 - 3000 tonnes of high explosives, which according to the New Scientist could generate "the world's biggest non-nuclear explosion" should they combust.

Eyes Right - the green strip just above the boats is Canvey Island.

Straight Ahead - the brown speck on the horizon is this place as seen on Grand Designs

Look East - looking towards the SS Richard Montgomery

Oh and it just happens to between two tanker lanes and a short hop from an oil refinery - there's more on it here

Oooo that's not gonna just rattle my windows but take me right out if it goes off!!!
But hey! - lifes too short to worry about it.

We have so many evocative WW1 & WW2sites here in Essex - I count myself very lucky indeed...

Ally you'll be fine a long as you don't go jet ski'ing near the wreck - apparently the water surge could flood Holland.

Lil - did you know Frankie Howard was stationed in Southend during WW2

Here you go -

I read his biography which had a lot more detail in it, but it's why he would come and do warm up shows and try out material at the Palace Theatre - I saw him there about 1987 I think

I prefer the tale of the boat full of routemasters that got rammed by jap cargo boat some about here. The buses were being exported to cuba and the theory goes it was all a big cia plot and that.

I've never heard that one - I wish this was some made up tittle tattle but unfortunatley it's legit

Here's the BBC and New Scientist on the wreck
