1 across and 3 down?

Click on the pic' to enlarge

I’ve been doing a spot of loft bothering lately. Digging through boxfuls of vintage goodies and golden oldies – annuals, sticker books, scrapbooks - but more importantly a mighty stash of music mags Smash Hits, Flexipop and assorted oddities like Zig Zag (with a fab feature on Soft Cell’s pervy ol’ Sex Dwarf video) and Noise. It’s an almost sequential run that starts around ’79 and fizzles out around ’84 ish…

The issue below contains a cracker of a nugget – a guide to the Sheffield scene written by Martyn Ware of The Human League, at the time of publication the League have recently signed to Virgin, ABC are still known as Vice Versa and Def Leppard have just been picked up by Phonogram.

I'll scan it in at some point, but until then, any ideas about the incomplete crossword ? No hurry I’m only 29 years past the deadline to win that fab cassette recorder…

Cover Date - August 23rd - September 5th 1979

I guess you never know what you might find when you go digging around. This looks really cool. I don't have any sort of thing like this. Reminds me that my uncle in his closet always had a bunch of old Playboy and Kung Fu mags.

Why, 1 is Boomtown Rats and the other's ovation, of course!

There's nothing like going through old boxes of stuff. I love it and, like you, I've kept everything, including all these Smash Hits, etc. So many memories

Kung Fu mags - great stuff keith, I used to have a load of the poster ones, but have still got a handful of American monster mags from the mid seventies - loads of 30s horror and fifties sci-fi features and 'Doc Savage' with Ron Ely for some reason.

Don't know how I missed those at the time FC, the memories are great, and the it's the context balance of what's popular and stuff that's dropped of the radar since is such a time waster - bands that were going to be huge but weren't Freur and Blue Zoo.

PS Barry Cain the inventor Flexipop is working on a follow up to his explosive 77 Sulphate Strip, with an 80s version based around Flexipop...

dem's easy questions. Strangely the most nostalgic things are often the ads. I got a copy of the mag with a 12 inch lp in it and the ads for cigarettes, tdk tapes walkmans are some the best thinsg in it. i have feeling it's the one with stranglers on the front!

I had a complete run of Smash Hits from February 1981 to May 1984.

Binned em a while back when I cleared out my old cupboards at my mum's unfortunately.

I think it was Feb 81 - I bought it for the lyrics to Kids In America, so it could have been March...

anyway!

I'm sure I had a flexipop with Motorhead and Girlschool in it. The 12 year old me found Girlschool quite..intriguing. Looking back I do wonder about my mind...
